A Systematic Review of Research on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in English Language Teaching and Learning (2015-2021): What are the Current Effects?

Aim/Purpose: This study carried out a systematic review of the literature on artificial intelligence (AI) in English language teaching (ELT). The objective was to delineate current research progress field and further understand challenges. Background: analyzed articles published between 2015 2021. Methodology: qualitative method employed. Five steps were taken steer review. 200 scrutinized; 64 retained. Contribution: Prior AI ELT has not investigated how is progressing or what areas are being covered. Without holistic picture, some important findings could be missed. Understanding studies designed implemented will contribute greater understanding existing state research. Findings: Findings show that there promising future for ELT. yielded positive results terms optimizing skills, translation, assessment, recognition, attitude, satisfaction, etc. It also found more topic published; mixed most commonly used, higher education level sampled, students as participants developed novel AI-based systems. Various approaches have been identified reviewed studies, including machine learning, neural network, support vector machine, genetic algorithms, deep decision tree, expert system, natural processing, data mining, cloud computing, edge computing. However, still its infancy, where little conducted gaps present, especially inherent issues related body language, gestures, expressions, emotions, lack elaborate description material used learning driven by AI, uncertainties vagueness with regards can considered under realm authors outside discipline. Recommendations Practitioners: likely provide practitioners an overview adopted technology, method, instruments and/or tools, educational level, skill, effects reported designing effective systems use their classrooms. Recommendation Researchers: Researchers need conduct along detailed in-depth methodology, design, proposed achieve Furthermore, it recommended researchers explore efficiency previous ensure relevance functionality.
